When West Meets East: Challenges for Today and Tomorrow

It is difficult to clarify the scope of “International maritime law”. Commercial scholars and lawyers consider that it is a narrow legal field; while maritime scholars and practitioners argue that it is comprised of a very broad range of disciplines either: all matters in relation to finance, construction, insurance, salvage, towage and decommissioning of vessels; or all issues regarding transportation of goods and passengers by sea, transactions, finance and security involving seaboard trade. When West meets East, this issue is more complex.
In considering that the aim of this conference is to bring West and East professionals to discuss the inter-reginal impact of maritime legal issues, in order to establish a broad horizon, this conference will bring together internationally distinguished scholars and practitioners to discuss maritime issues from the broad point of view.
In the context of Brexit and the rise of China, this conference will bring together internationally distinguished scholars and practitioners to discuss the following topics that arise in the global maritime economy, with special focus on current shipping, ports, banking, insurance, dispute resolutions, and regulatory issues as follows:
· Marine insurance law;
· Maritime codification;
· The impact of economic stagnation and security on the shipping industry;
· Legal issues in relation to China’s Belt and Road Initiative;
· Finance and banking issue in international trade;
· The development of ports;
· Dispute resolutions.
